What is Additional Support?
Additional Support is there to help students to get the best out of their time at Bilborough.
Who is it for?
We offer Additional Support to students according to their needs, regardless of ability.
In a typical year we work with a range of students, providing support for:
- dyslexia
- dyspraxia
- mental health difficulties
- medical conditions
- English as an additional language
- sensory impairments
- number or maths difficulties
- Asperger’s syndrome
- spelling difficulties
- building confidence in study skills
Does this apply to me?
During their time in college we see a significant percentage of the students on roll. If you consider you might need some help we will discuss your need for support on an individual basis. You have the opportunity to indicate your needs on the college application form. We then make contact with you to anticipate any adjustments you may require whilst at college. If you need help to complete your application form or wish to discuss your needs before you apply, please contact us.
Once at college, to help us identify any difficulties that may arise later on, all students take an Initial Diagnostic Assessment at the start of the year and appropriate support is offered to some students, irrespective of their academic ability. We frequently uncover underlying problems which have not been identified previously and assist students in overcoming these.
How do we support students?
Using our specialist knowledge and experience within the department and expertise from outside agencies, where necessary, we:
- offer regular 1:1 support sessions to some students
- explore ways of providing appropriate classroom support
- loan equipment and provide access to assistive technology
- screen for specific difficulties and arrange for assessments
- set up special exam arrangements
- modify timetables
- help students develop study strategies and build confidence to become independent learners
- contact schools to ensure continuity of support
- contact outside agencies for specialist input if appropriate
- provide advice about progression after college including information about the Disabled Students’ Allowances for higher education.
The college building is DDA compliant.
If you consider you would like help you are welcome to come and discuss this with us in Additional Support at any time during your course.
