Physical Education

Do I need GCSE P.E?

AS Level Physical Education is very different and much more theoretical. It is therefore highly recommended to acquire at least a grade B if you have studied G.C.S.E. P.E.  If you have not studied this subject before it is no disadvantage. ‘BTec’ or equivalent has no real relevance to AS Level.

How successful have students been?

Very successful, when they have learnt all the complex theory and when they have been able to perform two different sports to a very high level.

Is this course recognised by universities?

Yes. There are numerous courses to study thanks to a high grade in A Level Physical Education; these include physiotherapy; sports science; career in the leisure industry.

What Qualities do I need?

Very high levels of motivation and commitment, and a drive to succeed. A genuine desire to learn very scientific theories; AS Level Physical Education demands a lot from any student

Practical

Two sports at a high representative level; each sport is worth 15% of the total AS grade. Students can select any activities from the OCR website list but they cannot choose sports they have never played before or if they are only moderately good at a sport. Students choose their first sport for their coursework analysis because they know all the technical skills, coaching points and training methods linked to that sport.

Theory

This is worth 60% of the total AS grade. There are three compulsory questions in the final examination; one for each of ‘Anatomy & Physiology’, ‘Acquiring Movement Skills’ and ‘Social & Cultural studies’. There are three lessons per week.

Students who are able to perform both their sports at a good level have a much greater chance of achieving or exceeding their target grade for AS Physical Education based upon previous results. Students who can combine physical ability with academic qualities are able to achieve a much higher overall grade.
