Special Feature

Bilborough College Arctic expedition in July and August 2010 - to Eastern Greenland.

This summer, a group of Bilborough College students and staff travelled to the remote Ammassalik region of Eastern Greenland for the inaugural Expedition of the biannual college expedition programme. The trip was an amazing success and the team had a great time exploring the incredibly beautiful region on foot, camping in some incredible places and meeting local people. As part of the expedition the team helped to rebuild part of the Ammassalik Museum’s turf-walled structure using traditional local building methods. This was very rewarding and enjoyable and allowed us to give something back to the local community in return for their warm welcome and support of our expedition. There were many other highlights to the trip from getting very close to Whales and Seals on the boat to the island to beautiful midnight sunsets surrounded by icebergs to relaxing in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon on the way home. What an extraordinary place, friendly people and all together a truly once in a lifetime experience!

Planning is now underway for the next college expedition in 2012 to Marrakesh and the Atlas mountains of Morocco with the theme of ‘Arctic to Africa’.
